Overwhelmed and unsure why.
Your child – or even you – may feel overwhelmed by the world in ways that are hard to explain.
Sounds feel too loud.
Busy environments feel unbearable.
Even everyday situations can quickly become overwhelming.
You may notice shutting down, covering ears, avoiding certain places… or emotional reactions
that seem to come out of nowhere.
It can feel confusing. And exhausting.
You may find yourself wondering:
Why does something so simple feel so hard?
When the nervous system is on high alert
At the root of many of these experiences is the nervous system.
When the nervous system doesn’t feel safe, it stays in a state of protection.
In this state, the brain is constantly scanning for danger.
Sounds feel sharper.
Voices feel overwhelming.
The body feels tense, reactive, or shut down.
This is not a choice.
It is your system doing its best to protect you.
A neuroscience-based approach to healing
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is an evidence-based therapeutic intervention grounded in
neuroscience, specifically in Dr. Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory.
It is designed to help regulate the nervous system by gently improving how the brain processes
sound and social cues.
Using specially filtered music delivered through headphones, SSP works through the auditory
system to support the part of the nervous system responsible for safety, connection, and calm.
This is not just listening to music.
It is a targeted, therapeutic process that helps your system begin to shift out of survival mode
and into a state of greater ease.
A gentle and collaborative process
SSP is designed to be safe, gradual, and supportive.
We move at a pace that honors your nervous system.
There is no forcing.
No pushing.
No overwhelm.
Throughout the process, we stay connected and attuned to how your body is responding. This is a collaborative experience, where your comfort and sense of safety guide the work.
For many clients – especially children – this feels approachable and non-invasive. Simply listening.
And allowing the body to respond in its own time.
Supporting sensory sensitivities and emotional regulation
SSP is especially helpful for individuals who experience:
• sound sensitivities or auditory overwhelm
• sensory processing challenges
• anxiety or chronic stress
• difficulty regulating emotions
• social challenges or feeling disconnected from others
• trauma-related responses
As the nervous system begins to regulate, many people notice meaningful shifts:
• sounds feel less overwhelming
• environments feel more manageable
• increased sense of calm and safety in the body
• improved emotional regulation
• greater ease in social connection
For children, this can mean fewer meltdowns, improved focus, and a greater ability to engage
with the world around them.
For adults, it can feel like finally being able to exhale.
Healing through connection and safety
At Heart In Balance, we integrate SSP within a whole-person, mind–body approach to healing.
Our therapists understand that true healing involves not only thoughts, but the nervous system,
the body, and emotional experiences.
SSP may be combined with other therapies such as:
• somatic and mindfulness-based approaches
• EMDR and Brainspotting
• play therapy for children
• trauma-informed psychotherapy
This allows for deeper integration and lasting change.
Your system can learn to feel safe again
If you or your child have been living in a constant state of overwhelm, it can begin to feel like
this is just “the way things are.”
But the nervous system is capable of change.
With the right support, it can learn to feel safe again.
To soften.
To regulate.
To connect.
You don’t have to keep living in a state of constant overwhelm.
We would be honored to support you or your child in this gentle and transformative process.
